Starting this afternoon Forward WhatsApp messages are limited to a maximum of 5 times
Representatives from WhatsApp met directly with the Minister of Communication and Information Rudiantara in Jakarta on Monday afternoon (01/21/2019) at the Ministry of Communication and Information Office.
Reporting from inet.detik.com, WhatsApp was represented by Vice President of Public Policy and Communication Victoria Grand, and also Head of Public Affair, WhatsApp Carl Woog.
They talked about WhatsApp's efforts to handle hoax content that became viral because it was shared in a chain through its application.
WhatsApp has just issued a new policy. Starting this afternoon at 12.00 West Indonesia Time, they began limiting the number of forwarding messages up to five times which will be applied in Indonesia.
This was revealed directly by WhatsApp Victoria Grand's VP of Public Policy and Communications when meeting with Minister of Communication and Information (Menkominfo) Rudiantara.
Restrictions on the number of forward messages on the new Whatsapp application apply to Android OS users. Whereas for IOS devices is in the process of being developed.
This limitation does not only apply in Indonesia, but throughout the world which also uses the WhatsApp application. The policy was taken as a WhatsApp effort to reduce viral hoaxes or hoaxes that were scattered through the platform it developed.
How to do WhatsApp by limiting the number of times the message is forwarded to other users, in this case five times.
This was also appreciated by Minister of Communication and Information Rudiantara. In fact, according to the man who is fondly called Chief RA, he has discussed the restrictions on the number of forwarders since long ago.
"This feature is to limit the number of forwarders and to reduce the potential for viral hoaxes. Actually we have talked about this since last September 2018, but it has not been announced to people," said Rudiantara at the Ministry of Communication and Information Office, Jakarta.

Will the Implementation of Forward Restrictions Message on WhatsApp Effective to Prevent Hoaxes?
WhatApp limits messages that are forwarded to counteract hoaxes. However, how effective is the policy?
The above question arises, because users can just save the content received and send it back to others. Thus, the hoax will still potentially be viral at a later time.
According to VP of Public Policy and Communication WhatsApp Victoria Grand message forward restrictions have a significant impact. At least that can be seen from the results of the trial ahead of the policy in the middle of last year.
"There was a change in behavior in forwarding messages. We managed to reduce 25% since the trial was conducted," Victoria said.
While Minister of Communication and Information (Menkominfo) Rudiantara did not dismiss if the message could be viral by sending back to many people. It's just that with the restrictions on the number of forwards, it can reduce the potential for hoaxes to become viral.
"This is like a series of measures that could have been used to unlimited to unlimited, which is now limited to five. This will far reduce," said Rudiantara.
Rudiantara also said, WhatsApp itself has been conducting beta testing in the past two months on this new feature.
"It will be effective starting January 21, 2019, but that is America's time, so here it is effective starting tomorrow," he said.
The Minister of Communication and Information also appreciated WhatsApp's efforts to limit the number of forward messages. "This is a joint effort between WhatsApp and the government from 5 countries, including Indonesia, because in those countries the virality of the hoax must be dealt with immediately. And Indonesia is entering a priority country," he said.
Furthermore, Chief RA assessed, with this effort, WhatsApp is not only concerned with business in Indonesia, but also strives to create a conducive climate for the Indonesian market, especially nearing the upcoming Presidential Election in April 2019.
Rudiantara said what WhatsApp did might not completely eliminate hoaxes on the internet.
"Compared to the previously unlimited limit, for me, this is like a series of steps that have been forwarded from unlimited to unlimited now to five to five, this is a significant difference (compared to no limit)," the overlap.
Rudiantara said that if the messages shared on WhatsApp were all positive, there would be no need to limit the number of forward messages.
However, because he realized that the message shared was not only positive, he claimed that restrictions were needed.
"If it is negative content, or fake news, of course it will become common together," he said.
"We cannot address 100 percent hoaxes, at least we can mitigate the risk. We can mitigate number as lower as possible," he concluded.
